Johnny Iuzzini … A journey to the emotional heart of a pastry chef!

To say that Johnny has serious amounts of adrenaline is like saying Charles Lindbergh enjoyed a nice easy flight … to hang with Johnny is to be pretty much wide open to whatever is about to go down  .. his wild energy level is awesome and his desire to be playful in every moment is infectious …

My first memories of meeting Johnny are at this killer bar down the street from my boy George Mendes’s joint Aldea …  the discussion was pretty personal, but the initial image i had was pure Johnny, which is to say the dude is all emotion …

… next time we meet up is at his loft in Brooklyn, a quiet urban base camp … the space is raw and open with a great view and vibe that exudes passion and privacy.  As i walk in, Johnny was hangin his bag and was preparing to take a few initial strikes …

… it wasn’t long before the first quick punches were being thrown, knuckles were getting seriously bruised up … this is one of his critical outlets for getting emotions out … it was a real and authentic moment in his life and a truly great way to get to know him … it’s also exactly why we decided to make this book, to show the humanity in these wickedly talented chefs daily lives … to give a more honest view of their world than what you probably will get to experience on television.

Along with working intensely in his pastry kitchen at Jean Georges, or the charismatic side of Johnny on display on Top Chef Just Deserts, it’s perhaps cooler to more deeply explore this very influential chef in an easier day to day environment, to get to know a different side to him …

It’s exciting to venture inside his pastry kitchen and to experience Johnny executing the virtuosity of his craft, but i think equally thrilling to see him just living life within these very private moments, where another side of him can be quietly revealed …
